Threads are the part of Discord most often reported as losing data, and they almost never do. The
confusion comes from archiving, which removes a thread from view without removing it from
existence.

## The four durations

| Minutes | In practice |
| ------- | ----------- |
| 60 | One hour |
| 1440 | One day |
| 4320 | Three days |
| 10080 | One week |

These are the only accepted values. A request setting anything else is rejected outright, not
rounded to the nearest option — which is the usual cause of a thread-creation call failing with a
validation error after someone "just changed the timeout".

## What archiving actually does

An archived thread leaves the active thread list. Its messages, members and permissions are intact,
and it remains reachable through search, through a direct link, and through the channel's archived
thread list. **Posting a message unarchives it.** Nothing is deleted at any point.

This is why "our thread disappeared" is almost always an archiving report rather than a deletion
report, and why the fix is usually to explain where the archived list lives rather than to restore
anything.

## Archived is not locked

The two are independent and get confused constantly:

- **Archived** — inactive, hidden from the main list, reopens automatically when someone posts.
- **Locked** — closed to new messages; posting does not reopen it, and only someone with the
permission to manage threads can unlock it.

A thread that should stay closed must be locked, not merely archived, because an archived thread
reopens the moment anyone replies. Conversely, locking a thread you intended only to tidy away
prevents the conversation from resuming naturally.

## Why this matters most in forums

A forum channel contains only threads, so every post in it is subject to auto-archiving. A support
forum with a one-hour duration will bury unresolved questions within the working day, and the
symptom presents as "nobody answers here" when the real cause is that nothing stays visible long
enough to be answered. For a question-and-answer forum the longer durations are almost always
correct; for a busy chat-adjacent forum the shorter ones keep the list readable.
