# Rate Limit

> Discord’s cap on how many REST requests a bot may make. Limits apply per route and major parameter — not per endpoint and not per application — so two channels have separate budgets.

The major parameters are `channel_id`, `guild_id` and `webhook_id`. Posting to channel A and
channel B draws on two separate buckets; two posts to the same channel share one.

Discord returns the bucket identity in the `X-RateLimit-Bucket` header. Exceeding a limit
returns HTTP 429 with a `retry_after`. Channel renames are limited far more tightly than
messages, which is why counter channels update slowly.
