# Timeout

> A native Discord punishment that blocks a member from sending messages, reacting or speaking for up to 28 days. Unlike a mute role it survives rejoining and needs no channel overwrites.

Timeout replaced the old muted-role pattern and is strictly better: a mute role stops working
the moment someone leaves and rejoins, and it requires a deny overwrite in every channel.
Timeout is enforced by the platform.

The 28-day ceiling is a hard platform limit. Anything longer needs a kick, a ban, or a bot
that re-applies the timeout on a schedule.
