# Discord embed limits

> A Discord embed allows 25 fields, a 256-character title, a 4,096-character description, and 1,024 characters per field value — but the combined total across the whole embed is capped at 6,000 characters.

## Per embed

| Element | Limit |
| --- | --- |
| Title | 256 characters |
| Description | 4,096 characters |
| Fields | 25 |
| Field name | 256 characters |
| Field value | 1,024 characters |
| Footer text | 2,048 characters |
| Author name | 256 characters |
| **Combined total** | **6,000 characters** |

## The limit that catches people

The 6,000-character combined total is the one that fails unexpectedly. Every individual
element can be within its own cap while the embed as a whole is rejected — 25 fields at 1,024
characters each would be 25,600 characters, four times over the ceiling.

Anything building embeds from variable data should measure the total before sending, not just
the parts.

## Images

Images referenced in an embed must be a publicly reachable URL, or an attachment on the same
message referenced with the `attachment://filename` scheme. A local path or a URL requiring
authentication renders as a broken embed with no error returned.
