# Discord message limits

> A standard Discord message is capped at 2,000 characters, 10 embeds and 10 attachments. Nitro raises the character cap to 4,000. Upload size depends on the server boost level rather than the message.

## Per message

| Limit | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Message content | 2,000 characters (4,000 with Nitro) |
| Embeds per message | 10 |
| Attachments per message | 10 |
| Upload size | Varies by server boost level |

## Bulk deletion

The bulk-delete endpoint accepts between 2 and 100 messages, and **will not delete anything
older than 14 days**. This is a platform restriction with no workaround: clearing an older
backlog means deleting messages one at a time, against the per-channel rate limit.

It is the reason a purge command appears to silently do nothing on an old channel.

## Why this matters for bots

Anything generating a message from data — a leaderboard, a log entry, an export — needs to
plan for the 2,000-character wall. Bots typically respond by paginating, by moving into an
embed (which has its own, different limits), or by attaching a file.
